Canadian Historical Association Annual Meeting

In June 2020, Western University in London, Ontario will host the 99th annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association. This year’s Program Committee has elected not to designate a conference theme. Instead, all are invited to submit proposals in English or French on any topic related to the research, teaching, or presentation of history. Proposals are welcome from academic and public historians and from colleagues in related disciplines, from Indigenous people as well as settlers, from within and beyond Canada, and on any era, people, or place within or beyond Canada, with a special interest in transnational and comparative perspectives.
All sessions are 90 minutes, and most will consist of four presenters. The Program Committee strongly encourages submissions of full panels, including a chair, but individual submissions are also welcome. We also invite proposals for sessions in other formats, such as roundtables and film screenings. (The annual meeting will also feature a session to showcase posters and digital projects. The call for this session will be announced early in 2020.) Only one paper proposal per individual will be accepted. We reserve the right to request additional information and modify panels if necessary.
Generally, presenters must attend the conference and present in person. However, we will also plan for a small number of remote presentations, connecting over Skype, Zoom, or another video conferencing service. Those proposing a remote presentation or even full session will be asked in the submission process to provide a justification for presenting in this form. Please note that all presenters, including those presenting remotely, must be members in good standing of the CHA.
The CHA has launched a new electronic submission system, and all proposals are to be submitted through this site, at https://cha-shc.ca/abstracts. Applicants will need to sign in (if you have been a member of the CHA within the last five years) or create a user profile to access that section.
Proposals consist of contact information, a 250-word panel abstract (if applicable), a 250-word abstract for each presenter, a 1-page curriculum vitae for each presenter, a justification for presenting remotely (if applicable), and reference to anticipated AV requirements. The deadline for submissions is 15 October 2019. No late submissions will be accepted.
