David Cowx, “An Economic History of the Yukon: Capitalism and Class in the North, 1800-2000”. Dalhousie University.
Synthesizing an impressive array of source material, this article-length essay surveys the origins and development of a capitalist economy in the Yukon. Cowx highlights key moments over two centuries as settler modes of production entered territory largely populated by Indigenous nations. Lucidly written, with thoughtful analysis of how class developed and was manifested in this territory and with insightful comparison to capitalist developments in other regions of Canada, Cowx’s essay is an outstanding example of undergraduate research.
