Rafico Ruiz, “The Moving Image on the North Atlantic, 1930-1950”.
Branching out from some unedited film footage of the Grenfell Mission, Rafico Ruiz in this challenging paper explores the interface of environmental history and media studies. Using an expansive theoretical concept of media environments as well as a number of archival visual artefacts, he demonstrates how historical media do more than just illustrate narratives – they are integral to a joint process of mediation through which humans and the North Atlantic environment have evolved together.
