Announcement: CHA Annual Meeting 2027

Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Canadian Historical Association is delighted to announce that its 2027 annual meeting will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on the lands of the Anishinaabeg, Anisininew, Ininiwak/Nehethowuk, Nakoda, Oceti Sakowin/Dakota Oyate, the National Homeland of the Red River Métis, and Treaty One Territory. It will take place Monday to Wednesday, June 14-16, 2027, and will be hosted by St John’s College, at the University of Manitoba.

We have been touched by the enthusiastic response to the 2026 annual meeting in PEI, and we are greatly looking forward to this event. In under two months, we will be gathering in Charlottetown, alongside the conferences of Atlantic Canada Studies and the Canadian Catholic Historical Association, for one of our largest ever annual meetings.

This enthusiasm and support prompted the CHA Executive and Council to explore the possibility of hosting our own annual meeting again in 2027. The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences has not yet announced where and when it will hold Congress in 2027, and a number of organizations have already planned their own conferences for next year. Though the CHA has decided to host its own annual meeting again in 2027, this does not mean that the CHA has permanently left Congress. The CHA maintains its Federation membership and has not ruled out returning to Congress in 2028.

The CHA has not met in the Prairies since 2018, and it has been 22 years since the annual meeting was last held in Manitoba. As such, we were so pleased when St John’s College expressed interest in hosting the annual meeting. We are also incredibly fortunate to introduce the University of Winnipeg’s Ryan Eyford as the CHA’s 2027 Program Chair and Local Events Coordinator. We are privileged to have Dr. Eyford’s expertise and dedication as we work toward planning for next year.

We are also excited to share that the 2027 annual meeting will be held the same week that the conference of the Association of Canadian Archivists meets in Winnipeg, which will provide the opportunity for shared cultural and professional events. It is also likely that the CHA will team up with other associations, similarly to what we are doing this year. Moreover, we expect that publishers will be keen to attend a book fair in Winnipeg.

Please mark June 14-16, 2027 on your calendars – we would love for you to join us in Winnipeg!
