Benoit Marsan, « Le mouvement des sans-travail québécois des années 1930 et les droits humains ». Bulletin d’histoire politique, 31, 3 (2024).
Drawing on a rich body of sources, Marsan examines the protest movement of unemployed workers in 1930s Québec to explore the tensions that have shaped the historical development of human rights in Canada. His analysis of the Québec government’s efforts to suppress jobless activism and delegitimize demands for the recognition of economic and social rights as fundamental civil liberties reveals the contradictions at the core of liberal human rights discourse. Marsan’s work skillfully weaves together the histories of labour, social movements, civil and human rights, and Québec politics in a compelling and original way.
