In February 2023, a first webinar enabled seven organizations to discuss the need to consolidate links between historical societies, both professional and civic.

Historical Societies and the Study of the Past webinar.

At a subsequent meeting in May 2023, it was agreed to produce an inventory of historical societies in Canada, and to this end a steering committee was formed comprising the CHA, the FHQ, the Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française (IHAF) and the British Columbia Historical Federation (BCFHS).

The 4 organizations agree that it is now time to bring together historical societies and federations from across Canada, in order to draw up a portrait of all our activities, and to make their activities known and recognized to all historical societies in Canada, as well as to the Canadian public in general. It will also provide a basis for reflection on how we can build stronger links between ourselves and, where appropriate, act in concert.

On the occasion of the 2024 CHA Congress, the State of Historical Societies in Canada report was made public. The report presents, in both official languages, the project approach, observations and responses from 14 Canadian historical societies, both professional and citizen-based, pan-Canadian and provincial/territorial.
