Founded in 1922, the Canadian Historical Association will soon be celebrating its 100th anniversary. This seems to be an opportune time to give our magazine a new purpose. Therefore, the next and subsequent issues of Intersections will be centered on specific themes in order to share new, creative approaches to historical research with our readers.
In the first half of its existence, many historians extolled the virtues of so-called heroic ancestors. Since then, they have tried to pay greater attention to hitherto marginalized figures; workers, women, the disabled, ethnic minorities, the 2SLGBTQI+ community, and Indigenous peoples. This effort has been pursued with even more vigor in recent years, with the aim of painting a more diverse and inclusive image of the past.
The next issue of Intersections is dedicated to expanding this conversation. The editors invite scholars to submit an image accompanied by a very short essay (400-600 words) illustrating how looking at the margins may profoundly change our understanding of the past (Canadian or foreign). The margins are, here, loosely defined as everything that cannot be considered mainstream.
The image should act as a teaser of sort to get readers’ attention and invite them to deepen their understanding of certain important issues. Participants are welcomed to include a short bibliography (4-5 references).
The special issue has four purposes:
- To widen the scope of our historical knowledge (Canadian or foreign).
- To contribute to the decolonization and ‘de-orthodoxing’ of the curriculum.
- To appreciate better the vast spectrum of research conducted by historians nationwide.
- To serve as a pedagogical tool in high school, cegep, and university classes.
All submissions must include a (copyright free) image and a very short essay (400-600 words). All topics of interest are accepted, no matter the geographic location and the historical period.
The deadline for submission is 15 February, 2022.
Submissions have to be sent to the CHA office, cha-shc@cha-shc.ca. They should include the full name of the author, and contact information.
