In January, the Department of History at the University of Manitoba and the CHA Indigenous History Group co-sponsored an online roundtable on Indigenization and history curriculum. The event was entitled, “Like Paddling Upstream: Indigenous History and Curriculum Structures in Canadian University History Departments.” The roundtable featured members from the University of Winnipeg (UW) History Department Indigenization Committee – including Dr. Mary Jane Logan McCallum, Dr. Roland Bohr, Dr. Jason Yaremko, Dr. Karen Froman, and Dr. Ben Nobbs-Thiessen – as well as Dr. Sean Carleton as moderator. Rooted in the recent experiences of UW’s committee, participants spoke about a number of initiatives and the challenges and opportunities that will be of interest to others engaged in curriculum review and Indigenization in university History departments.
