You can’t spell “Charlottetown” without “CHA”!
The CHA is thrilled to announce that its next Annual Meeting will be held Monday-Wednesday, June 1-3, 2026, in Charlottetown, PEI. The event will be hosted by the University of Prince Edward Island.
As you will recall, the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences announced in early May that Congress 2026 has been cancelled. A subsequent poll of CHA members showed the membership’s strong desire that the CHA should nevertheless hold its in-person Annual Meeting. At this point, the CHA leadership promised to do everything in its power to respect these wishes.
Following the publication of the survey results, the CHA contacted universities all over Canada to gauge their availability and interest in hosting the 2026 Annual Meeting. After many positive conversations with different institutions, the CHA chose the University of Prince Edward Island, and is immensely grateful for the support that it has already received from the university.
Charlottetown last hosted Congress in 1992, and next year will mark 15 years since Congress last met in the Maritimes. Prince Edward Island, in addition to being one of Canada’s most beautiful tourist locations, is reachable by a number of direct flights from across Canada, and is an easy drive for CHA members from the Maritimes. UPEI itself is easily accessible from the Charlottetown airport, and has many on-campus accommodation options.
Excitingly, the CHA’s Annual Meeting has been organized to align with two other conferences that will be of interest to many members: the conferences of the Canadian Catholic Historical Association (June 3-4) and the Atlantic Canada Studies Association (June 3-5). Additionally, the CHA has contacted the university presses, and they are keen to come to the conference.
Finally, the CHA is delighted to introduce Mount Allison’s Andrew Nurse as its 2026 Program Chair and UPEI’s Lisa Chilton as the Chair of the Local Organizing Committee. The CHA is incredibly fortunate to have such dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, and Andrew and Lisa are already working hard to ensure that the 2026 Annual Meeting is one for the books!
Please mark June 1-3, 2026, on your calendars – this will be a novel Annual Meeting in many respects, and we would be delighted if you could join us in PEI!
